In AP Studio Art, students are asked to demonstrate proficiency in 2D design using a variety of art forms. These could include, but are not limited to illustration, painting, printmaking, graphic design, digital imaging, photography and collage.
This type of design involves purposeful decision making about how to use the elements and principles of art in an integrative way within a spectrum of ideas, as well as a major focus on skills development in these areas. Students will create several projects during the year for their portfolio. Students will learn about 2D Drawing, Design and Studio Art.
Each project will include components such as research, skills development, preliminary drawings and concept sketches, the final project and documentation. Today it is of the utmost importance to document your work. This is a skill valued across curriculum, and serves to support your future resume, whether you end up becoming an artist, writer, business person or architect.
The last section of each project will be dedicated to photographing and documenting all the stages in your artistic process in preparation for submitting these works to the AP College Board. The working images, revisions and final artwork are all assembled into one image to truly capture the students' process, which is a significant part of the college board scoring.
Each artwork then needs to be described in terms of materials, process and ideas, and a brief, succinct summary of the Sustained Investigation and overall experience explained. This is where the majority students need to the most assistance.
Course Description
The emphasis of AP Studio Art is to create an extensive body of work that demonstrates the student’s mastery of artistic concepts and technical skill, their ability to focus their work on a particular visual idea, and their ability to work with a myriad of mediums and approaches to achieve their visual ideas. Students will produce a minimum of 20 works that satisfy the requirements of the Quality and Concentration sections of the AP Studio Art 2-D Design Portfolio as specified herein. This program will be adaptive to each student’s particular work ethic, ability and interest. Students should have room to be independent with their creative process, while still having course deadlines to ensure that they stay on track with their production. Art making is not always a leisurely process and to ensure future success, students need to learn how to manage themselves and their own workflow in order to achieve their goals within certain time constraints.
